#46: I Pledge Allegiance
This next one is another one where whether or not it’s an oddity will depend on what you’re used to. In many schools in America, the day starts with the students singing along with the national anthem and/or reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, hands over their hearts (although it’s a custom, not a law; the government doesn’t make anyone do this).

A lot of countries don’t do that, but there are a handful that do have various national pledges that people recite in school, like Mexico and Singapore. If you’re worried about indoctrination, don’t; let me assure you, when you’re eight and all you’re thinking about is the lizard you brought for show and tell, you’re not thinking very hard about the words you’re pledging. It’s not going to shape your future opinions that much.
