#37: Millard Fillmore (1850-1853)
Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States from 1850 to 1853, is often criticized for his support of the Compromise of 1850, which included the Fugitive Slave Act. Fillmore’s failure to take a firm stance on the matter contributed to his unpopularity, particularly among abolitionists and those opposed to slavery.
His endorsement of the Fugitive Slave Act, mandating the return of runaway slaves to their owners, was definitely his downfall. Despite this contentious action, his party did not choose Fillmore for a re-election bid.
