Break a Leg
Another idiom explained: when we’re headed for an important job interview, a big test or an audition, our friends tell us to break a leg. However, we’ve always found it counter intuitive: why would we want to break a leg? That’s not a good thing, on the contrary – it takes away our mobility and leaves us in pain and distress.

It turns out there’s a perfectly logical explanation for this idiom, according to the Twitter user “good ol joles”; originally, it was used to encourage actors when auditioning for roles. When we break a leg, we find ourselves in a cast, and so if actors want to be in the cast, they should break a leg. We’re not sure whether this is indeed the origin of this phrase, but we like it nonetheless.
