#9: American Football Goes International
Football, college or otherwise, is a uniquely American sport. Other countries don’t play it as much, preferring to play what we call soccer. Even though college football has origins from the late 1800s, it didn’t have an international moment until 1985. The first international college football game took place on November 23 of that year.
The game featured Boston College and Army in Dublin, Ireland. It seems fitting that the first college football game outside the United States would take place across the pond. American football was born out of soccer and rugby. Rugby has roots in England and the UK, so it’s a cool throwback to sports history.
